What to Look for in PMOS-Friendly (PCOS) Meals

PMOS (previously known as PCOS) is an endocrine and metabolic disorder that affects an estimated 1 in 8 women around the world. While this disorder affects people in many different ways, the right supportive eating habits can make a meaningful impact. In this short blog with MealFix, let’s explore what mindful eating habits can look like for PMOS and how a few changes (like a meal subscription) can help manage them.

As always, it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making any major changes to your diet.

What Is PMOS (PCOS)?

This past month, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) was officially changed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

This name update marks a historic milestone in women’s health.

But why? What’s in a name?

Before this change, there was an uneven importance placed on ovarian cysts, leading to misinformation and even delayed care in some cases. In reality, PMOS often affects the entire body. It’s a disorder that can lead to insulin resistance, irregular periods, hair and skin issues, among other challenges.

Why Balanced Meals Matter for PMOS

PMOS is more than just a hormonal condition; it can affect how you feel mentally, emotionally, and physically every day. PMOS also affects key metabolic processes, as up to 70% of women affected by PMOS are insulin-resistant. Insulin is a key hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, but people with insulin resistance don’t respond to this hormone as efficiently. As a result, this resistance may lead to other challenges like chronic inflammation, cravings, and fatigue.

Sustainable eating habits can be one of the first lines of defence against these symptoms and help make managing these challenges easier. The key to PMOS-friendly eating is steady blood sugar throughout the day, much of which can be achieved with a sustainable diet.

What to Look For in PMOS-Friendly Meals

PMOS-friendly eating is all about supporting hormonal balance and providing the right kind of energy for your needs. The goal is simple: fewer blood sugar crashes, fewer cravings, and less workdays powered solely by caffeine. When building a plate, keep an eye out for these three sources:

Whole grains

Fibre-rich carbs are digested by the body more slowly, which helps keep blood sugar more balanced. Whole-grain oats, quinoa, brown rice and barley are good sources of these slower-burning carbohydrates.

Non-Starchy Vegetables

Colourful, low-starch veggies are naturally low on the glycemic index and are high in fibre! Think vegetables like broccoli, peppers, zucchini, and leafy greens.

Lean Protein

Protein is crucial to a healthy diet, and even small swaps here can make a difference that you can feel. Skinless chicken, fish, and eggs are solid choices. In addition, options like beans, lentils, and tofu are also fantastic protein sources and contain zero cholesterol.
