Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of the Day?

We’ve all heard that common saying about breakfast being the most important meal of the day—but is that the truth? Is breakfast truly as important as its reputation suggests, or is that just something parents say to get us to finish eating?

Read on with the MealFix team, as we explore all about the ins and outs of breakfast! We’re Southern Ontario’s chosen provider for stunning prepared meals in Toronto, delivered straight to your door.

The History of Breakfast

We’ve talked about how snacking can be a part of a healthy diet, but where does breakfast fit in this equation? Is it as important as they say, or has it benefited from some great marketing over the years?

To understand why breakfast gets so much attention, let’s go back to the beginning.

Breakfast didn’t get much press back in the day. In fact, for much of history, it was only seen as a practical way for working people to fuel up in the morning. For example, ancient Romans ate common foods such as bread and cheese in the early hours before long hours of labour. Though the act of ‘breaking your fast’ was often a part of daily life, it wasn’t until the structured workdays of the Industrial Revolution that it became increasingly essential.

Today, breakfast is widely eaten around the world, with countries having vastly different breakfast foods. From English fry-ups to Japanese tamagoyaki and Mexican chilaquiles, breakfast looks wildly different depending on where you sit at the table.

Why Breakfast Matters

“Well, that’s all good and well,” you may be thinking, “but does that apply at all to modern life?”

You’re not alone in thinking this. In fact, nearly 6% of Canadians report never eating breakfast. The truth is, for many, eating breakfast is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people simply don’t feel hungry in the morning, while others prefer to have a larger meal later in the day.

Regardless, eating breakfast still offers many studied benefitsOne key benefit of eating breakfast is curbing unhealthy eating habits, as many people who skip breakfast later end up reaching for high-fat or high-sugar foods to curb hunger. Beyond curbing later cravings, breakfast can also help with focus and energy through the morning. Stable blood sugar early on tends to mean fewer afternoon slumps and less reaching for a coffee at 3 PM.

Not All Breakfasts Are Created Equal

While eating in the morning often offers upsides, there’s a real difference between a breakfast that fuels you and one that makes you crash at 10 AM. Some foods will naturally offer sustained health benefits throughout the day, while others leave much to be desired.

Highly processed breakfast foods aren’t the healthiest. In fact, many of the most common breakfast cereals found in grocery aisles today pack over 30% of their weight with added sugar. The result is a quick energy spike, followed by a steep crash before lunchtime even rolls around.

For longer-lasting energy, look for breakfasts that combine slow-burning carbs with a real source of protein. Steel-cut oats with Greek yogurt and berries, eggs on whole-grain toast, or even a savoury breakfast bowl can keep you fuelled for the day.
